8 Steps to Jumpstarting a Successful Job Search

8 Steps to Jumpstarting a Successful Job Search8 Steps to Jumpstarting a Successful Job SearchHow to Set the Stage for a Successful Job SearchBefore you start applying for jobs, make sure youve set up your job search for success. When youre waiting to receive the first draft of your professionally written resume, it can feel like an eternity especially when youre itching to land your next job. However, dont consider this time to be a waste. While a well-crafted resume and cover letter are key to a successful search, theyre only one piece of the job-search jigsaw puzzle. To land the right job as soon as possible, there are a lot of things youll need to do before you can start applying for jobs. Use this valuable time to complete the action items below so you can hit the ground running as soon as youve approved the final draft of your resume.Write down your goalsBe clear on the type of job youre seeking and write it down. You are 10 times more likely to accomplish your goal when you do t his. elend only that, but this information will influence many other aspects of your search, from the types of employers you target to how you prioritize your networking activities. Consider all aspects of the job, from the work environment and industry to your commute and desired salary. The better defined your goals, the more efficient your job search will be.Create a target company listLanding a new job often requires you to pursue multiple job opportunities at the same time. To streamline the process, its helpful to build a list of companies that meet your location, industry, size, and corporate-culture needs. Use the information you brainstormed above to create your target list of employers. Then, research each company on your list to get a better sense of their current job openings and determine if anyone in your existing network is somehow connected to behauptung organizations. Start following these employers on social media, especially if they have accounts dedicated to recru iting, and set up Google News Alerts for each of them to keep you in the know. Get organizedTake a little time to figure out the best way for you to keep your job-search activities organizedCommunication Consider creating a professional-looking, new email address with Gmail thats reserved for your job-search activities. Also, if you decide to upload a picture to your email account, make sure its appropriate for your job search. Revisit the voicemail message on your cell phone, as well, to confirm that it includes your name so employers know theyve called the right person.Job applications Whether youre interested in a web-based solution like Huntr or JobHero, or you prefer to go old school with an Excel sheet or Word document, its important to find a way to track your job applications and other job-search activities. Keep track of the company name, job title and location, job listing URL, where you found the job, the point of contact (if applicable), the date you applied, and the nam e of the resume file you used for the application. As you start applying for jobs, be sure to document the date you followed up on your application and if you secured an interview.Job boards Run some Google searches to uncover niche job boards in your field or industry (e.g. marketing job boards). Make a list of all the job boards youd like to use for your job search and start creating your profile on each so all you have left to do is upload your new resume. In addition, upload apps to your smart device that will help you stay organized and search on the go.Audit your ansprechbar presenceOver 90 percent of recruiters admit to looking at candidates online profiles regardless of whether the candidates provided this information. If youre not actively managing your online presence, you may be hurting your chances of landing the job. Google your name to get a sense of what employers will find when they search for you and set up Google Alerts for your name to actively monitor it going fo rward. Then, deactivate or update any profiles you have on job boards, social media platforms, online directories, and so forth to ensure employers will find the same professional online that they will meet face-to-face. Finally, increase the security settings on personal accounts you dont want employers to find.Earmark jobs that interest youStart searching for job opportunities online that youre interested in and qualified to do. Before you add a job to your list, ask yourself these questions to make sure the job application will be worthwhile. In addition to adding the job to whatever ordnungsprinzip youve chosen to organize your applications, be sure to save a copy of the job description in a Word or Google document so you have it for future reference. Oftentimes, a company will take down its job posting once its received enough applicants, so you may not have access to this information when its time to prepare for the interview.Prep for your job applicationsResumes and cover lett ers work best when they are tailored to specific job openings or employers. While professionally written resume will be in great shape, youll still need to make minor tweaks to the keywords to customize it for a specific job listing. These small optimizations will increase your applications chances of getting past the hiring bots and on to someone in HR for review.Jot down the keywords that are used repeatedly in the job description, and make a note of any skills or qualifications that seem very important to the employer. That way, you can be sure to highlight this information in your cover letter and resume when the time comes. Also, if there isnt a name associated with the job listing, do a little online sleuthing to uncover the name of the hiring manager or recruiter responsible for the role. That way, you can properly address your cover letter.Make networking a priorityTheres no denying the power a strong professional network can have over your career success especially when y oure looking for work. In fact, youre 10 times more likely to land a job when your application is accompanied by a referral. Use this time to ramp up your networking efforts.Take a second look at your existing contacts and prioritize them based on their connection to the companies, fields, and industries that interest you. Start reconnecting with these people and setting up coffee dates and phone calls to ask for help with your job search. Also, explore new professional associations to join or events to attend that sound interesting and are relevant to your goals. Click on the following link for more ideas on how to grow your professional network.Line up referencesReferences may not belong on your resume, but they play an important role in your job search. Line up at least three references from people with whom you currently or previously worked. The idea is to identify people who have insight into your skills and capabilities and who you trust to say good things about you and your p erformance. In other words, target people who are willing to advocate for your candidacy. Then, contact these people and make sure theyre willing to be a reference for you when the time comes. Once your professional resume is ready, be sure to send each of your references a copy so they have a better sense of your current goals and qualifications. Now that youre starting your job search on the right step, are you ready to start interviewing? One thing I wish I knew at 22 that would have changed my life

One thing I wish I knew at 22 that would have changed my lifeOne thing I wish I knew at 22 that would have changed my lifeGraduation season brings with it a flurry of inspiring commencement speeches designed to open our eyes to what the future can hold if we let it. One of my fruchtwein favorite of these speeches is Steve Jobs 2005commencement address at Stanford University, highlighting how we can connect the dots of all that we are and all that we care about, and learn to truly live before we die.One of the many powerful messages he shares is thisYour time is limited, so dont welcheste it living someone elses life. Dont be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other peoples thinking. Dont let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.(Heres thetranscript of the full speech.)In the past 12 years (after 18 years in corporate life, then 5 years as a therapist), Ive worked as a career and personal growth coach, writer, speaker dedicated to helping women live, lead and love bravely. I hear from literally thousands a people a year who have fallen off (or never really gotten on) the path to living bravely, or learning to fully live with their whole hearts, souls and minds engaged before they die.In thinking back to my younger self, as I was just graduating from Boston University as an English Literature major, I can say with complete certainty that, while there were some very important things I did know, there was one essential, life-changing fact I didnt. And because of my lack of understanding of this fact, I suffered, floundered and wasted 18 years in a professional life that made me sad, sick and searching desperately for life purpose and meaning. That one fact I failed to understand was thisEach and every one of us can make a true difference in the world, and change i t for the better. In watching yesterdaythe inspiring weddingof Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and hearing their interviews recorded before the wedding, a picture emerges of Meghan that she understood at the very young age of 11 the fact that we can make a difference in the world, if we stand up for what we believe is right. (Heres that inspiring story).I wasnt raised to think this. Instead, my upbringing taught me to make sure not to shine my light too brightly or speak up too loudly, for fear of looking like a braggart, or not becoming someone who is too big for my britches. I was taught somehow to dim my light so I wouldnt make anyone jealous or angry. I was even taught that if I didnt do the right things in life, the evil eye could get me. (I was never sure what the evil eye was, but I was afraid of it nonetheless, and it kept me toeing the line for years.)I wasnt taught nor did I understand until much later in life that each and every one of us has a kernel, a powerful seed, ins ide of us that if we nurture it, we can become more than ourselves. We can make an important, positive difference. We can advocate for others, take a brave stand, and reshape life and the world around us.Im not blaming my parents for not teaching me this fact. They absolutely did the best they could with the knowledge they had about life and how to live it. And they showed me great love and kindness. But I can say this going forward, as parents, the single most important thing we can teach our children is that they DO matter, and to fulfill their destiny, they need to be brave. They can indeed change the world for the better. That their voices and ideas are powerfully important and impactful. And they need to be encouraged every day to become a braver, stronger and more empowered version of themselves so that they can accomplish the amazing things they dream to achieve and create. Some will say , Oh yeah, Kathy, but you have to be a celebrity, or rich, or a royal to have that font of impact.Ive personally seen over these past 12 years that thats not correct. And its clear that the world is seeing just how every day people young and old, rich and poor, educated or uneducated, of all races, with means or not, are making a difference. People just like you and me - from all walks of life, with all levels of education, financial means, and access to power - can make a difference, and make the world better. The key is to nurture those vitally important seeds inside of you, and stand up for who you are and what you believe. If we commit to that, well truly live before we die, and change the world around us in the process. To learn how to live, lead and love more bravely, join me in myFinding Brave Life Masterycoaching program today. Nix Political Discussion in Your Workplace

Nix Political Discussion in Your WorkplaceNix Political Discussion in Your WorkplaceMidway through a recent job interview, the candidate began discussing his political opinions. Whether we ardently disagree with his opinion- and his job candidacy had already soured for other reasons- we were startled by the impropriety of his political discussion in a work setting. Especially in an interview situation, his lack of judgment sent a clear message to us about his common sense and his ability to help lead the organization. Polarizing employees who felt discussing politics in the workplace would be inconsistent with our cultural norms. Not satisfied with his anfangsbuchstabe sally into no mans politics land, he went on to tell us how he had recently voted and about the political bumper stickers he had seen in the company parking lot. At this point, the interview turned into a casual chat until we ushered him out of the office. We dont care who he supports in his politics, but political dis cussion is normally unwise in any work setting. This candidate failed to exercise good judgment as he spouted his political views during a job interview, of all places. In a workplace that honors diversity, every persons politics, religious beliefs, sexual activities, and opinions about non-work issues should, for the most part, stay home. Unless you work in a setting that is dependent on a particular set of beliefs, such as a Republican Party field office, an environmental lobby group or a church, you risk much more than you can hope to gain when you raise sensitive issues at work. At best, you risk offending coworkers whose help you need to accomplish work. In the worst case scenario, you may create a hostile work environment and qualifikation long-term hard feelings among coworkers. The Supervisors Role Regarding Political Discussion at Work As a manager or supervisor, if you become aware of political or another discussion, ribbing or name calling, you need to deal with it as you would any other potentially negative situation that can escalate into conflict among people. Dont ignore the political discussion. It wont stop on its own and will likely escalate unless you give staff members a friendly reminder. Recognize that you walk a fine line between allowing your employees freedom of expression and managing a potential source of conflict. Casual discussion during the work day, when it does not interfere with work, is crucial for developing work relationships. Positive work relationships are essential for positive employee morale and employee retention. In fact, having a best friend at work, according to research by the Gallup organization, is essential for retention. If you are concerned that political and/or other sensitive issue discussions are getting out of hand, manage the potential conflict before it escalates. Provide feedback to remind people that political discussion, that potentially harms interpersonal relationships, belongs outside the workpl ace. Communicate the difference between expressing personal beliefs- which should be acceptable, although often unwise at work and attacking the beliefs of others which is not acceptable. You can handle most situations on a case by case basis with your adult employees. In some workplaces, you may want to consider the adoption of a policy that bans the bildschirm of political, religious and other articles, slogans or objects that could potentially create conflict among your employees. Proponents of this type of policy believe the employer has an obligation to control sources of conflict at work. Make sure that your harassment policies and harassment complaint system are posted and that employees are trained in the process.Use progressive discipline if an employee repeatedly attacks or scorns political, religious or other deeply held beliefs of coworkers.Provide respect and dignity behavioral training to all employees and emphasize respect for different ideas, beliefs, and needs.Make sure your Code of Conduct clearly spells out the need to honor diverse opinions, beliefs, values, and goals. Conclusion Freedom of expression is good in the workplace, especially if you want a workplace environment that honors diversity, seeks divergent ideas, allows room for respectful disagreement and fosters continuous improvement. These are all signs of a healthy, employee-supportive work environment. Watch to make sure, however, that the discussion of politics, religion, and differing beliefs does not escalate into workplace conflict and hurt feelings. My job was the most toxic relationship I had

My job welches the most toxic relationship I hadMy job welches the most toxic relationship I hadYoure not being treated right, girlfriends would say. You should just leave. The situation was getting unbearable. I was being ignored, mistreated, and was unappreciated. I wanted to leave, but couldnt get out. How would I support myself? If I stayed, I wondered if Id eventually be replaced with someone younger. I felt stuck - I needed the financial support yet was worried what it was doing to my normally very solid self-esteem.From the time I was young, I often heard things like marry rich or marry a doctor, from outsiders who deemed this little girl worthy of those prizes. My motherbei always chimed in, No, shes going to have her own career, she wont need anyone elses money. Shell make her own way. Coming from a generation of women whose only choice was to get married to a guy from the neighborhood and have kids, she emphasized college and career to enkoranvers my freedom, self-worth, a nd happiness. Just find a man who loves you and treats you well. I dont care if its the garbage man.Feeling ignoredWhen I first got involved, I had that nagging feeling I had made the wrong choice. Hearing You have such a pretty smile was lovely, but I wasnt sure I was really being seen for more than my blonde hair and red lips. When I spoke or offered a suggestion, I was ignored. Over time, I felt hostility directed at me late-night emails criticized my ways. Why cant you do things like so-and-so? So-and-so was the one who came before. I couldnt compare. I didnt want to.Once, after a difference of opinion, things escalated verbally. Doors slammed and voices raised. The words Everything you do is useless came at me with anger. How do you want me to communicate with you? Smoke signals? You dont listen I volleyed back, keeping my tears in check until later when the words hit me even harder. It was clear I wasnt valued.I tried to get out, but my options were limited. I wasnt sure I cou ld make it on my own and there werent many other offers out there. I needed the financial stability, but even that became tenuous when I was told I couldnt have as much anymore. Being stuck in a situation for so long where I wasnt respected, I was starting to feel useless.I knew the end must be near and wondered if Id be cast aside for someone younger. Perhaps a flirtier girl who had not yet learned to stand her ground one with a pretty smile and lower expectations, too shy to nag? Now that I was 40, would anyone want me? I admit, I put on my best dress and looked outside for validation - and found interest wasnt there. I was old school. Old.Intersection of Notorious Employer, Downfall of an Industry and Middle AgeFinally, one day, I was dismissed. Set free with an alimony of sorts to get me by for a bit.Having braced for this, I was actually relieved now I could spread my formerly bound wings with a safety net until I could figure things out with a clear head. I laughed at the ne ws, slightly giddy while I quickly packed.I had taken the advice my mother gave me so long ago, yet ended up in the exact spot she warned me about. But instead of a strict husband, I was dependent on a bad job.I started in the publishing industry young and ambitious and created a career I loved and where I had gained respect. That is until I reached the intersection of Notorious Employer, Downfall of an Industry and Middle Age. At first, I experienced little annoyances I could tolerate, like inefficient systems or co-workers not trusting my expertise. But as time wore on, bad management, frequent and draining late nights and a feeling of being on the hamster wheel, exhaustingly going nowhere fast wore on my patience. Ive never seen people work so hard for mediocrity, said an ever-changing array of disgruntled staff as they passed through the revolving door of employment. I wasnt happy, but I stayed because I needed the money. And then that stability was shaken. Like a controlling hus band reducing his wifes allowance, my salary was cut significantly, and not long after another large project was thrown upon me. After the initial shock and some budget tightening, I tasted a tiny bit of freedom. Whereas before I was hesitant to entertain the same job with a different brand of craziness for significantly less money, now it was all the same.I turned 40 while working there, a milestone that didnt really phase me in my personal life, as I still felt and looked the same. There was no magic middle age fairy dropping crows feet, spare tires and a get off my lawn attitude at midnight on the Lordy, Lordy birthday. But at work, I started to feel like a dinosaur. Getting a new job used to be the solution and an easy one at that, but with the shift in the industry, salaries were decreasing while workloads were increasing. Even my reduced salary wasnt helping, as eventually there were fewer jobs in print while online seemed to look for excuses not to hire folks from old media. I was a short-armed T-Rex and all the opportunities were on the unreachable top shelf. Ohh, this is what my mother warned me about. After being in demand for most of my career, I now felt like the middle age woman who was losing her looks.Sweet freedomWhen I was finally laid off, I was platzset free. The stress, responsibility, and exhaustion was no longer my problem Id have time to recover with a little financial help from severance to keep me on my feet. I felt like that moment The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy wakes up in Technicolor Oz, leaving black and white Kansas far behind. Until, of course, the reality of unemployment and the challenges facing my industry set in. But still, the weight of being mistreated was off my shoulders. The thought did cross my mind that if I had been married, I might have had some financial stability to walk out of the job on my own terms but that scenario negates all my solo happiness and accomplishments. Plus, just because youre a damsel in distress, doesnt mean youre guaranteed your knight in shining armor. And there are those who would argue I could have walked out at any time but as the product of a blue-collar upbringing with no trust fund safety net that was not an option. You simply dont leave an income, for no income - its irresponsible. But I have no regrets on the personal choices Ive made and I frankly have no regrets on the professional ones either. What can you do when things get tough beside have integrity and hope and figure out a way to work hard without beating your head against a wall? Because of my experiences Ive gained so much knowledge Ive been called the wise woman on the mountain in my new position - a job thats the good guy, where Im appreciated, valued and make a difference. And like most jerky exes, I hear mines still struggling, which feels pretty good.Tara Cox has appeared inThe NY Post,Newsday,MensJournal.comamong other places.
